The Oxford Centre for the Mind

Our Principles

To give effect to our philosophy, we have developed the Oxford Mind Principles. The aim of these is to help keep you focused on developing your mental skills and abilities and to ensure that doing so not only helps you in your own life, but enables you to make a greater contribution to the world at large. We suggest that if you really want to make a difference to your life by developing your intellectual abilities, you commit to the Oxford Mind Principles.

The Oxford Mind Principles

Recognising that the human mind is the most powerful, unique and valuable tool in the world, we ask you to commit to the following steps: -

  1. To develop your mental, intellectual and cognitive abilities to the utmost degree.
  2. To use your intellectual skills to live the fullest life that you possibly can.
  3. To constantly learn new things, explore new situations and meet new people.
  4. To use your intellectual gifts to make the most positive contribution to others that you are capable of.
  5. To take good care of your mind and brain at all times.
  6. To take a mindful and thoughtful attitude to life.
  7. To solve problems and disagreements by rational thought and discussion.
  8. To renounce the use of violence in solving problems and disagreements and to encourage others to do the same.
  9. To constantly be curious about the workings of your own and other people's minds.
  10. To always think for yourself and never allow somebody else to think for you.
  11. Never to assume you are always right and to form your own views with humility.

In return we commit to: -

  1. Help you implement these principles and incorporate them into your life.
  2. Train you in relevant areas of mental, intellectual and cognitive development to help you live up to these principles.
  3. Provide you with a plan that will help you incorporate these principles into your life and ensure that you maintain any benefits that you make.
  4. Provide regular information and maintain regular contact with you to ensure that you maintain any gains you make.
  5. Invite you to participate in any projects that we run to develop our vision in the future.
If you wish you can make this commitment public by completing the form below. We will announce your commitment on our twitter feed. By making a public commitment you are more likely to stick with it.
